...and now for the games that count

It's pretty hard to get excited over a preseason game, even if it is a rematch of the most recent Super Bowl.

That said, it was pretty ho-hum, even for a preseason game. Eli Manning and Tom Brady were absent, there were only a few big plays on either side of the ball, and no one was left in East Rutherford to see the Pats try to mount a comeback. The Giants, of course, won 19-14 and finished the preseason even at 2-2.

David Carr played much better throughout the course of this game than against the Jets the previous week, which might not be saying a lot because he had nowhere to go but up, but it was still good enough to warrant serious consideration for the backup QB role. The Giants also have potential playmakers in Manningham, London, and Ware. Replacement kicker Josh Huston missed a PAT but nothing else.

The defense will miss Strahan and Osi for certain, but Mathias Kiwanuka can fill one of those roles. I saw him play at Boston College before he arrived with the Giants and know him to be a talented player (some of which Giants fans have already seen, and would have seen more of had he not been injured). In any case, the defensive end role is now his full-time once again.

It will be interesting to see Tom Coughlin's list of final cuts to the roster (which are supposedly coming on Saturday). Especially on the offensive side, there are a number of good candidates to choose from, so I don't envy the decisions the coach has to make.

The preseason, though, is mercifully over. Now it will be the champion Giants at home against Washington. The Giants are currently the favorites and I would expect them to be.
